In February 2013, VSU started the construction of a valuable gift for its students – a new dormitory at 42a Kholzunova Street. In March 2013, VSU Rector Dmitry Endovitsky and the construction workers of the OOO Stel-Invest contracting company installed the first pad for the foundations of the new dormitory which has now become part of the North university campus. The construction went on at a quick pace, and this autumn, at the beginning of the new academic year, the comfortable room of the new building will welcome the first tenants.

– The construction of a new VSU dormitory is not only the result of the university administration's social policy, but also a factor of competitiveness of the university. Last year, school leavers from 74 territorial entities of the Russian federation entered VSU. That is why the university needed a new comfortable dormitory with good living conditions for the students, said VSU Rector Prof. Dmitry Endovitsky.

Recently, on 9 June, the new dormitory was officially opened. The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Olga Golodets, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Alexander Klimov, the Voronezh region governor Aleksey Gordeev, Head of the Department of Education, Science, and Youth Policy of the Voronezh Region Oleg Mosolov, and the VSU Rector Dmitry Endovitsky.

We asked a few questions about the new VSU dormitory to Viktor Pyatibratov, Head of the University Dormitory Complex Administration.

– Viktor Borisovich, can you tell us what else will be there in the dormitory apart from the living accommodation?

– In the new dormitory, there will also be a student café, 2 small gyms, an e-library where the students will be able to access the Internet, and a first-aid post. We have tried to create an atmosphere that is favourable for the health and leisure of the residents.

– So, how many people will the dormitory accommodate?

– There will be rooms for more than 300 people.

– Mass media have mentioned that the new dormitory offers "general purpose accommodation". What does that mean? How is it different from the other VSU dormitories?

– In the existing dormitories, there are blocks of rooms, each housing twenty people. By contrast, in the new dormitory, only five students will live in a block, each with two bathrooms and its own kitchen.

– They say the students are to move in as early as this autumn. What are the categories of those who will be lucky enough to live there?

– There already are some regulations regarding this. The new dormitory is for VSU Bachelor's degree and postgraduate students getting the highest grades, as well as international interns and the students who are actively involved in the university's sporting, research, and students' activities.

– How can one become a resident if they fit these criteria and want to move to the new dormitory?

– They need to go to VSU's Social Department. The representatives of the Social Department, the Trade Union, and the Joint Students' Board will organize a residence commission.
