Ozonated oils (olive, almond, flax-seed, sunflower, and castor) are commonly used worldwide to produce creams, shampoo, and ointments. Russia's fat-and-oil industry is experiencing a considerable growth. The project of Aleksandra Peregudova, a young scientist of Voronezh State University and a postgraduate student of the Department of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry, "Preparation of ozonated oil derivatives with high rates of residual desaturated fatty acids with high biological and antioxidant activity" provides opportunities for a new scope of application of oils as well as tackling the problem of the waste recycling. The project is being supervised by the Associate Professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry Nadezhda Stolpovskaya.

'Oils production is a key segment of the Russian food industry. Russia's overall production of highly processed oils has been growing in recent years. In 2006, the share of refined and hydrogenated oils of total production output was only 41%, whereas in 2010 it was 60%. Such growth leads to increase in waste with valuable side-products. One of the key refined oil production waste is fatty acid distillate of oils. They can be used as raw materials and ecologically friendly and inexpensive solvents which provides opportunities for substantial resources and personnel savings as well as mitigating the environmental impact,' says Aleksandra Peregudova.

The project can involve development of methods for synthesis of ozonated derivatives from oils and fatty acid distillates with high rates of residual desaturated fatty acids.

The suggested production of ozonated oil derivatives and fatty acid distillates can be used to prepare so called emollients – one of ingredients of daily skin care products. This products do not moisturise the skin but prevent it from moisture loss after washing. The product will be both price and quality competitive with its commercial counterparts.

'The project will also help to solve ecological and energy saving problems by means of of oils recycling. Development and implementation of the technological system using the oil waste will give way to a competitive production in line with the market demand.

There are no productions of this kind in the Russian Federation which explained the necessity to develop technological processes to replace the imported analogues.
