On 25th March, interns of the Institute of International Education's Department of the Russian Language for International Students of Voronezh State University celebrated the Day of Poetry. During the event students read poems in Chinese, Hungarian, French, Polish, German, Greek, Estonian, and Russian.
‘I used to think that only Chinese poems can be so sophisticated in meaning. It was a discovery for me today. I understood that every country, every nation, has very diverse and profound poetry: romantic, sad and funny,’ said a student from China.
Apart from poetry reading students told each other about their favourite poets, and the interns from China even sang a song to a poem of a Chinese classical poet Su Shi. Everybody had a chance to try and translate back Russian poems from their native language and compare them with the original. They coped very well with this challenge.
Two hours flew by very fast. Though it is not an easy task to understand poems in a foreign language by ear, the music of the word is open to anybody.
‘We are all from different countries and belong to different cultures and have different emotions and feelings but today, the poetry brought us together,’ said a student from Greece.
