The city's mass media report that in 2017, a new monument will appear in Voronezh, in memory of the founder of the city – Semen Saburov.
It was first planned that the monument would be finished and installed in 2011. The sculptor – Andrey Kovalchuk – imagined that the monument would show commander Saburov on horseback with his assistants and garrison guns around him. But the installation was postponed. Alexander Akinshin, professor from the VSU's Department of Russian History, recently reminded the local authorities about the monument, and the governor supported the idea.
Interfaks-Center says that according to Marina Rakova, head of the Regional Department of Architecture and City Development, the monument is going to be installed in 2017 in one of the oldest parts of the city – on Sovetskaya Ploshchad.
Semen Saburov was a military leader who built many fortresses and ruled several Russian towns. In 1585 he was sent south by the Czar. That year he founded Voronezh on the banks of river Voronezh, and then governed the town for several years.
