The Federal Tourism Agency reports that the Voronezh matryoshka took 22nd place in the top-25 list of national arts and crafts. The research was carried out by the Reiting information and communication centre and the Otdykh v Rossii magazine.
The studies were aimed at determining the most famous, recognizable, and attractive regional brands for tourists. Tula samovar topped the ranking, second place was taken by amber-craft items from Kaliningrad, and third place was given to Vologda lace. The ranking was rounded off by Kargapol toys (Arkhangelsk region) and Tomsk elm-crafts.
Voronezh matryoshkas are characterised by their oval shape. Each doll wears a national costume that corresponds to the style and spirit of one of the regional villages. The Voronezh matryoshka design was created by a pensioner, Elena Matveyeva. She is a graduate of the Petr Ponomaryev national art and crafts workshop. Elena Matveyeva has been making toys since 1969. The Voronezh matryoshkas never fail to touch the heart of the audience. They also have been presented at exhibitions in many countries around the world.
