Today, labour market is developing very fast and new requirements to specialists' training are appearing. The lack of specialist in certain areas is very common.
Voronezh State University tracks changes in the employers' requirements. This year, our university started enrolling students on a rare and one of the most demanded programmes for secondary vocational education – Optical Eyecare. The graduates of the programme will become qualified opticians-optometrists that are highly demanded today both in the Central Black Earth region and in Russia as a whole.
Opticians-optometrists study how eyesight works. They check eyesight and, if necessary, choose correction options. The specialist assesses visual field limits, takes intraocular tension, examines binocular vision, identifies the type and the degree of ametropia, and checks if there is astigmatism. Moreover, optician-optometrist diagnoses the main signs of eye diseases and in case of acute illnesses and injuries provides emergency medical aid.
According to Ucheba.ru, only seven educational institutions in Russia train opticians-optometrists. In the Voronezh region and its surroundings, VSU is the only university that trains specialists in this area.
The training will take place at the Department of Optics and Spectroscopy of the Faculty of Physics under the assistance of leading specialists from the regional ophthalmological hospital and the chain of optical stores Tochka zrenia. The students will have a chance to practice their skills by using the latest ophthalmodiagnostic equipment and to take part in workshops presented by the global leaders in the area of vision correction manufacturing.
