Voronezh State University won the regional round of the open public national competition between professional educational organisations and organisations of higher education for the best organisation of students’ sport activities in 2017–2018 academic year. The competition was held by the Department of Education, Science, and Youth Policy of the Voronezh Region.
Many VSU students do various sports, achieve outstanding results in them, and have sport ranks and titles. For example, in 2017, 189 athletes with considerable achievements in sport entered the university: 3rd rank – 43 students, 2nd rank – 56 students, and 1st rank – 52 students. Among them there are 31 candidate masters of sports and 5 masters of sport of Russia. 703 VSU students (excluding postgraduate students) have sport ranks and titles: 3rd rank – 111 students, 2nd rank – 206 students, and 1st rank – 224 students. There are 138 candidate masters of sports and 21 masters of sport of Russia.
The Department of Physical Education and Sports has sport clubs for 28 kinds of sport that are included in the programme of the Universiade between universities of the Voronezh region. Moreover, the Department of Physical Education and Sports in cooperation with the students’ sports club “Khitschnye Bobry” (Rapacious Beavers) annually holds sports competitions. One of the key indicators of sport results for each faculty is the Spartakiade between faculties.
Three times, Voronezh State University has taken part in the All-Russian Student Marathon which consists of a creative and a sports programme. The VSU team has taken 1st place for three consecutive years, leaving federal universities far behind.
VSU students are also actively involved in international, national, and regional competitions: The National Universiade, the national “Nation's Cross-country Race”, “Russian Ski Track”, and the Olympic Games between universities “Strength, Generation, Movement”. During the year, VSU holds the Voronezh basketball cup tournament, city championships in volleyball, basketball, chess, and table tennis.
The development of sport and fitness system is among the priorities of the university’s social and educational activities. Thanks to their sport achievements the athletes get extra bursaries and other bonuses. Every year, students involved in sport activities go to training camps at the Venevitinovo education, sport and fitness complex, the Dzerzhinsky rest complex and to the Black sea coast. The best athletes have a chance to take part in students’ championships and national competitions at the expense of VSU.
