The publishing house Springer published a book from the cycle “Texts in Computer Science”. The book entitled “The Discrete Math Workbook: A Companion Manual for Practical Study” (Springer International Publishing, 2018. – 485 p.). was written by the Head of the Department of Digital Technologies of the Faculty of Computer Sciences of Voronezh State University, Professor Sergey Kurgalin, and Associate Professor from the same department, Sergey Borzunov.

Springer is the largest publishing house in the world by the number of academic and scientific papers.

The book is a modern and well-thought out text book which shows in detail the connection between discrete mathematics and computer sciences. It is written in a simple language and has a great number of examples from IT technologies. It stands out from other similar publications thanks to the large number of problems it addresses that cover all the topics of a university course in discrete mathematics. The authors provide answers and instructions to almost every problem and detailed solutions to many problems given in the book.

The textbook is a result of many years of scrupulous work and is based on the teaching experience of the authors at the Faculty of Computer Sciences. The first part of the book is dedicated to the theory and problems with solutions in “classical” discrete mathematics. The second part targets future programmers. It deals with asymptotic analysis, and algorithms building, including parallel algorithms.

Parallel algorithms described in the text book were tested with the help of the resources of VSU’s Supercomputer centre.

The text book is aimed at university students and lecturers and can be used for  practical and laboratory training and independent learning.

The fact that the book was published by the international publishing house Springer in order to promote it among the academic community proves the high level professionalism of the specialists working at the Faculty of Computer Sciences of Voronezh State University.
