In the second half of the summer, Dmitry Zagumyenny, postgraduate student from the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, took part in a scientific expedition dedicated to the study of microbenthos.
The project is headed by a prominent Russian biologist, a professor at Moscow State University, Yury Mazey. Among other members of the research team are scientist from Lomonosov State University, Penza State University, Papanin Institute for Biology of Inland Waters of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Cytosymbiosis and Intracellular Symbiosis of the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Voronezh State University.
“We worked in the Gryaznaya bay in Kandalaksha gulf in the White Sea at three locations which are covered with water at high tide and exposed at low. My responsibility was to select protozoological samples and to handle and classify material by heliozoa. This is the protozoa I specialise in,” said Dmitry Zagumyenny.
In this White Sea expedition, Dmitry Zagumyenny represented two institutions: Voronezh State University where he is completing an undergraduate programme at the Department of Zoology and Parasitology of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences and the Institute for Biology of Inland Waters where he works as a research assistant.
During the expedition, the scientists gathered a lot of valuable material which will provide further basis for new scientific publications and will allow advancing the research of protozoa.
