Second year students of the master’s programme “International Business Communication” from the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology completed a practice training at the University of Bath (Great Britain) between 29 February and 15 March. The heads of the programme are Lubov Tsurikova, the Head of the Department of English Philology, and lecturer Daria Popova.

The staff of the British university had prepared for the students a programme which focused on career opportunities and personal fulfilment. Students visited lectures by representatives of the international companies, Ernst & Young and Teach First, workshops on business and interpersonal communication at the workplace, practical classes on making a CV, academic writing, translation, and business communication.

The master’s students took part in master classes on synchronous translation, studied types of communication, and learnt the rules of successful public talks. They also carried our their own research and presented their projects dedicated to the culture of students’ self-government and trade unions activities at British universities. The lecturers from the University of Bath highly praised their projects.

“We learnt a lot of new things in the disciplines we are studying. It was very pleasing to know that things that we have already studied at our university were praised by lecturers from Bath, for example our knowledge in the area of business communications, writing texts, and presentation skills. Most of the classes were practical and we could both learn something new and immediately try it out. We also helped local students: we helped them to process Russian texts and record them to add these examples of native Russian speech to the sound library at the faculty. We also had a chance to try ourselves out in a role of synchronous interpreters in an interpreting booth,” said the students.

The students visited the most significant cultural spots of Great Britain: London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Oxford as well as Blenheim palace, where Winston Churchill was born.
