Students of the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology Ksenia Kostoglot and Sofia Kohan became the winners of the international competition of research papers “Translation as a Factor in the Development of Science and Technology in the Modern World”. The competition was held from 13 to 16 November 2023 in the Linguistics University of Nizhny Novgorod as part of the 17th International Student Research and Practice Conference “Translation as a Factor of Science and Technology Development in Modern World”. The conference was organised by the School of Translation and Interpreting and International research laboratory “Theoretical and Applied Problems of Translation Studies” of Nizhny Novgorod Dobrolyubov State Linguistic University. The conference was held in-person and gathered a lot of participants from different places.

Ksenia Kostoglot, a 5th year student specialising in Translation and Translation Studies, took second place in the nomination “Problems of Audiovisual Translation”. She made a report on the topic: “Audio Description as a Special Form of Audiovisual Translation”:

“I was delighted to take part in this conference, its agenda turned out to be very rich! In addition to presentations and translation competitions, there were also workshops and lectures. We had a great opportunity to listen to well-known experts who shared their knowledge and invaluable experience! Thanks to the conference, I was able to discover a lot of new things, look at some theoretical issues from a different angle, and immerse myself in the world of science. I made new acquaintances and exchanged knowledge and experience with people who also decided to connect their lives with translation and who are really passionate about their work. I am very grateful to my supervisor, Associate Professor Elena Pivovarova, PhD in Philology, for her incredible support, guidance, and advice! I would like to thank the organisers of the conference for the high quality of the event!”

Sofia Kohan, a 4th year student specialising in Translation and Translation Studies, took third place in the nomination “Theory and Practice of Specialised Translation” with her report on “Synaesthetic Combinations in the Original and Translated Texts (French)”:

“Participation in the conference allowed us to improve our professional skills in translation, learn more about other translation areas such as subtitles and audiovisual translation, and improve our competitiveness. During the three days of the conference, we were also able to admire the beauty of Nizhny Novgorod. I would like to thank our faculty for the opportunity to participate in the international conference, as well as my supervisor, Natalia Fenenko, DSc in Philology, Professor of the Department of French Philology, for the interesting research topic, valuable advice, and recommendations on analysing the practical material.”
