On January 26, in the conference hall of the main building of VSU, Professor Anatoly Fomenko, Head of the Department of Differential Geometry and Applications at Lomonosov Moscow State University, DSc in Physics and Mathematics, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of VSU and a badge of honour for serving VSU.
Dmitry Endovitsky, Rector of VSU, delivered a speech. He noted the scientific merits of Anatoly Fomenko, noting that he is a truly outstanding world-class mathematician.
“Voronezh is inextricably linked with the history of Russia; it has always been the centre of our country. The history of Voronezh State University, the key university of the city, needs to be taught and highlighted. I am convinced that cooperation between VSU and MSU will further develop and strengthen,” said Anatoly Fomenko in his acceptance speech.
After the ceremony, Anatoly Fomenko gave an open lecture on “Hidden Symmetries, Billiards, and Mechanics” in the conference hall. Then, the participants of the event moved to the third floor to visit the exhibition of Anatoly Fomenko's paintings. Last September, the works of the artist and mathematician were already exhibited in the lobby of the third floor of the main building of VSU.
Granting the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of VSU to mathematician Anatoly Fomenko continues a remarkable tradition that began in 1999 with the awarding of such a title to Viktor Sadovnichy, mathematician, rector of Moscow State University.
“It is symbolic that Viktor Sadovnichy and Anatoly Fomenko are eminent sons of the heroic Donbass. Now it carries a special meaning in our scientific and pedagogical ties,” said Dmitry Kostin, Vice-Rector for Science, Innovation, and Digitising.
