A lecture by Igor Verbitsky, conductor of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of Voronezh Philharmonic Hall and Honorary Artist of the Voronezh Region, was held at Voronezh State University. The event was organised by the Russian Foundation “Znaniye”.
Igor Verbitsky works with the leading Russian and international orchestras and gives concerts both in Russia and abroad. He was also awarded a badge of honour from the Government of the Voronezh Region. His research interests comprise symphonic music of different ages.
In his lecture Igor Verbitsky talked about the today’s role of classical music. The lecturer discussed the following questions: "Why do we listen to music from previous centuries in the 21 century?" and "What do we gain from listening to world renowned masterpieces?"
He suggested the audience to share their opinions. A first-year student from the Faculty of Physics Ilya said that such lectures are very inspiring and motivating:
“Our head student told us that there would be a lecture by an orchestra conductor, who was to tell a lot about music, composers, and their contribution to our civilisation. I liked the lecture a lot. He talks about Vagner in a way that you might think he knew the composer personally. He knows so much about composers, as though he was part of their lives. We also had a chance to listen to some classical pieces and thus feel the epochs of the composers. I’ve been interested in music since I was a kid, so the topic was very important for me. I’ve learned a lot!”
